Introduction to CSS and HTML

This past week we explored the basics of CSS and HTML and put them into practice, as  we worked on multiple class exercises and homework assignments that required us to code some webpages using HTML and CSS. We worked on a “Snowman Website” exercise where we essentially duplicated an already existing website design. Unfortunately I was unable to attend class on the day that this exercise was given and I missed the lecture and had to figure out the assignment on my own. Thankfully all the resources given to us by the instructors were very helpful and clear and gave me the appropriate guidance to figure it all out on my own. I enjoyed working on the exercise as it was a challenge to put the knowledge we have learned into practice. On that same day we were also given a “Semantc Exercise” in which we had to choose a website of our choice and replicate the HTML used by that website using only semantic elements. I found this exercise a bit confusing at first as I tend to second guess my abilities and skills but once I was able to get past the self doubt I was able to successfully complete the assignment.

During the remainder of the week we remained occupied with a multitude of assignments and exercises ranging from Kahoot quizzes and in class exercises in which our understanding of HTML elements were put to the test. Our understanding of the concepts of HTML Block and inline elements were required as we worked on a short quiz like assignment in Codepen.

The other assignment we were given for the remainder of the week was “The Tribute Assignment” were we had to replicate an existing webpage using HTML and CSS, this assignment was a bit more complex as the webpage had more CSS to it than the previous assignments. After turning in thre first draft and receiving feedback on it I worked on condensing the first draft of code which once again felt like a challenge as the layout would shift with any of the changes made bringing me back to square one and having the initial feeling of confusion take over once again. I was able to overcome all this by trusting in myself and my knowledge and capabilities of self reliance where using the internet for help and answers led me to the appropriate problem solving solutions. As we were given this assignment we were also preparing for a test simultaneously, but thanks to the wonderfully instructors all was accomplished without much stress.

The week came to a close with a current event presentation I delivered on “Neuralink” the brain implant company that is set to start on human trails soon. This was a bit of difficult assignment as I was faced with presenting this topic and information in a way that would be appropriate for the class to digest and not raise discomforting or anxious feelings surrounding the rise of new technologies. During the last exercise of the week we explored the different methods of adding CSS. These methods consisted of using internal, external, and inline styling strategies to a webpage. In doing so we were able to witness and understang how these different strategies function and how they dont all take the same precedence.

Amongst one of the many unfamiliar topics in the assigned video is Javascript.

Javascript is a programming language and a “core technology of the World Wide Web”. According to a statistic found on Google, as of 2023, 98.7% of websites use Javascript. Javascript can be used in both front end and back end web development. It is a vast language that requires some extensive learning some of the resources I found regarding the subject will be linked below.
